Applications of Industrial Robots

In this post I will discuss some applications of industrial robots. An industrial robot is used in manufacturing units. So what are the characteristics of an industrial robot?

Well, an industrial robot can do dull, tedious, repetitive tasks with great accuracy. We can program it to do that. Hence, it is reprogrammable.

Here I list some of the applications of industrial robots

Manufacturing units make use of pick and place robots in a wide range of applications. You must have viewed these robots being fixed to a stand. You can see the parts of an assembly are moved through a conveyer belt. Robotic arm picks the part and places it appropriately. Pick and place robots are used in packaging also.

For increasing the safety of workers, robots can be used for welding. A robotic arm with a high-heat torch can melt the metal. The arm can move freely in three dimensional space.

The painting industry is makes use of robotic arms for spray painting. Both the robotic arm and drones can be used. There are lots of private investors who are working on the idea of spray painting with robotic arm.  Universities also conduct research projects in this field. The spray gun is controlled by robot. It can evenly paint the surface.

Robots in Construction Industry

The construction industry also can be benefitted with the use of robots. Since construction work is also repetitive in nature, robots can better perform it efficiently 24×7 in dark, dim-lighted space.

You can find that the construction robots can be used for 3D printing of the parts that can be used in the construction of buildings. Bricklaying is another application area that can be automated with the help of robots. The construction of the whole building can be achieved in few days only.

3D printing is not only used in construction work. You can use 3D printers to create anything. For example, you can print a gripper for the robot itself.

The robots can also be used in automatic grinding and sample preparation task in industries.

You can make robots do dirty and dangerous work which poses a health risk for a human worker. They can be used in a nuclear power plant where there is a risk of radiation. You can use such robots for sewage cleaning. Therefore, the robots can benefit industry and society in several ways.

Robotic Gluing is another application in manufacturing. Since advance technology is available, gluing can be done with any type of material. It eliminates the need of lots of parts. Robotic gluing is a solution to automated assembly.

Pros and Cons of using Robots

So, the benefits of using robots in industry are

  • They can perform repetitive, monotonous tasks efficiently.
  • Robots are programmable to specific requirements.
  • You can make robots can work for a much larger duration of time.
  • Robots can work in conditions that are not appropriate for human works.
  • They can do the dirty and dangerous tasks.
  • Use of robotics in the industry can lead to increased productivity in lesser time

There are certain drawbacks and challenges for using robots

  • High initial cost
  • Robots are not flexible. They can perform a specific task efficiently. For performing another task we need to develop different robots.
  • The use of robots can result in loss of jobs.
